Repente (also known as challenge) is a Brazilian folk tradition whose origins date back to the medieval troubadours. Especially strong in northeastern Brazil, it is a mix between poetry and music in which improvisation predominates – the creation of verses "suddenly".
The repente has several models of meter and rhyme, and its singing is usually accompanied by musical instruments.
When the instrument used is the tambourine, the repente is called coco de embolada; accompanied by a country guitar or fiddle, it is called Cantoria; sung without musical accompaniment, it is called intoned, toada or aboio
