Indie rock (or "independent rock" in Portuguese) is a musical genre that emerged in the United Kingdom and the United States during the 1980s. It is rooted in older genres such as alternative rock, post-punk and new wave. The term is often used to describe the means of production and distribution of underground music independent and decoupled from major labels, as well as the musical style to originally use this means of production.1
